Moving from Pocket

Pocket closed in 2025. If you kept the export it gave you, Read brings your saved articles back, and can read them to you.

What Read is

Read is a free read-it-later app for iPhone. You save articles, web pages and PDFs from the Share button, as you did with Pocket, and read them later. It can also read them aloud, one after another like a podcast, with a natural English voice that runs on your iPhone and works offline. There is no account to make and nothing is tracked.

Bring your Pocket list across

  1. Find your export. It's the file Pocket gave you when you exported your list, usually a CSV file. If it came as a ZIP, tap it in the Files app to unzip it.
  2. Open the importer. In Read, open Settings and choose Import from Pocket or a file.
  3. Pick the file. Read fetches each saved link into a clean copy on your iPhone, ready to read offline.
  4. Listen. Open an article and press Listen. When it ends, Read moves on to the next one in Up Next.

Pages that have gone from the web since you saved them can't be fetched again, so a very old list may come back with a few gaps.

From Instapaper, Matter or Readwise Reader

The same importer takes their exports as CSV, HTML, JSON or Markdown. Export your saved-links list rather than highlights only. Matter's ZIP archives and full offline article bundles aren't imported yet, so use Matter's CSV or link export.

What's different from Pocket

Questions

What can replace Pocket on iPhone?

Read is a free read-it-later app for iPhone that imports a Pocket export. You save articles from the Share button as with Pocket, and Read can also read them aloud one after another with a natural voice that runs on the iPhone. There is no account.

I never exported my Pocket list. Can I still get it?

Read can only import a file you already have. Search your email and your Downloads or Files for the export Pocket sent; if you can't find one, Read can't recover it.

Does Read keep my Pocket tags and highlights?

Read brings in the saved links themselves and fetches each article again. Export your saved-links list rather than a highlights-only file.

Can I import from Instapaper, Matter or Readwise Reader?

Yes. Read imports their exports as CSV, HTML, JSON or Markdown. Matter's ZIP archives and full offline article bundles aren't imported yet, so use Matter's CSV or link export.
